Corrections officer Gene Palmer charged in prison break

A second upstate prison worker was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the daring escape of two killers.

State corrections officer Gene Palmer was busted after investigators discovered he smuggled a package of frozen hamburger containing hidden tools to convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat, ABC News reported.

Disgraced Clinton Correctional worker Joyce Mitchell reportedly enlisted Palmer to help her incarcerated sex partners break out of Clinton Correctional Facility.

Mitchell, whose illicit hookups are a focus of the jailbreak investigation, may have worked up a sweat with more than just Sweat and Matt.

Joyce Mitchell, seen outside Plattsburgh City Court for her hearing last week, is charged with helping two convicted killers escape Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York.
Investigators are looking into whether the 51-year-old mom charged with helping the cons escape had sex with other inmates at the Clinton Correctional Facility, ABC News reported Wednesday.

"On her behalf all I can say is that she has consistently denied having any sexual relationship with inmate Sweat," her attorney Steve Johnston said today in a statement to ABC.

The revelation came a day after Mitchell’s hoodwinked husband, Lyle, insisted she didn’t cheat on him with Sweat or Matt — and as the search for the convicts dragged into a 19th day.

“We've received reported sightings each day and we have investigated every one,” said Major Charles Guess of the New York State Police. “So far, none of the sightings have been substantiated. But we continue to assure the public that any sighting or lead that is reported will be investigated until exhausted."

They are still concentrating on the dense woods around a private hunting camp on Black Cat Mountain — about 30 miles west of the prison in Dannemora, N.Y. — where the inmates’ DNA was found on a peanut butter jar along with discarded prison-issued underwear.

Meanwhile, state corrections officials reported the maximum-security Auburn Correctional Facility in central New York has been on lockdown since Friday after “the discovery of information related to the safety and security of the facility.” They did not elaborate, but confirmed that a complete search of the prison and its inmates was underway.

Earlier, a former Clinton convict claimed Mitchell and Sweat used to have sex at least four times a week in a storage closet.

Erik Jensen, 34, said their trysts were a “running joke.”

“She was like a grandmother-type figure” to the rest of the prisoners she supervised in the prison’s tailoring shop, Jensen said on CNN. “She would mingle, sometimes she would bring donuts to the workers in the tailor shop.”

Richard Matt (l.), 48, and David Sweat, 35, have been on the lam since breaking out of the maximum-security facility June 6.
But when work was done, Mitchell would slip off to the 8-foot by 15-foot room for a little afternoon delight with Sweat, Jensen said.

Investigators, however, say Mitchell confessed to have sex with Sweat, 35, and Matt, 48, and provided them with tools to break out of Clinton on June 6. She is now in jail.

Jensen, who served nine months in 2011 for violating his parole on a larceny conviction, said he never considered telling authorities about Mitchell and Sweat.

A prisoner could get knifed “if you’re a snitch in there,” he said.

Jensen also said he’s not sure how Sweat or Matt were able to smuggle tools out of Tailor Shop 3. “When you leave, you have to go through a metal detector like at an airport,” he said.

Asked about the CNN scoop that Matt may have gotten Mitchell to smuggle in power tools hidden inside a delivery of frozen hamburger, Jensen said, “He must have really sold her.”

The attorney for Palmer, who delivered the meat, said he didn’t know there was contraband hidden inside.

Andrew Brockway said Mitchell asked Palmer on May 29 to get a package of frozen meat from a freezer and deliver it to Matt's cell the next day.

"It was a one-time thing," Brockway told The Press-Republican newspaper of Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Palmer had been suspended before Wednesday's bust. He was charged with promoting prison contraband, two counts of tampering with physical evidence and official misconduct, according to state police.

Matt was doing 25 years to life for torturing, killing and dismembering his former boss. Sweat was serving life without parole for gunning down a sheriff’s deputy.

In an earlier interview with CBS, Jensen said Sweat was Mitchell’s No. 2 and that he manned a desk — not a sewing machine like the rest of them.

“I didn’t know he killed a police officer,” he said. “I would not even think that he was in there for murder the way he held himself.”
