Hammerhead shark spotted along Maryland beach

A hammerhead was spotted body surfing Maryland's waves reportedly for a second day straight Thursday, leading to a feeding frenzy of camera-toting beachgoers.

The estimated 8-foot-long, 300-pound carnivore was last spotted along Ocean City's bay Thursday evening, the state's Natural Resources Police said.

That follows previous sightings on Wednesday, NBC Washington reported.

Officers said that its condition may improve if "people back off and leave it alone."

In the meantime, stunned bathers have proven unable to resist snapping video and photos of the marvelous creature as it splashes in the otherwise empty waves.

Two such Instagram video can be seen here and here.

City officials said they are actively monitoring their "friends with fins" and calling swimmers from the water when its spotted.

"Our lifeguards are trained to keep you safe, however; it's imperative you listen to the whistle & follow any directions given by the guards," they reminded on Twitter.

Most hammerheads are harmless to humans, with the exception of the typically aggressive great hammerhead which can grow up to 20 feet in length, according to National Geographic.

The unique fish, famous for their mallet-shaped heads, are typically found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide. They undergo mass summer migrations, however, seeking cooler water.
