Tension in Enugu over failure to re-open UNN campuses

ENUGU — Tension built up, weekend, in Enugu State as the two weeks break the management of University of Nigeria Nsukka,UNN, gave students to vacate its campuses in a bid to avert impending riot elapsed.



The students had planned a protest over acute water scarcity and power outage in both Enugu and Nsukka campuses until the management got wind of it and decided to temporarily shut down academic activities.
The university management had in a statement by Okwun Omeaku, its Chief Public Relations Officer, said: “This is to bring to the notice of all students and the entire University Community, that the University of Nigeria shall proceed on a two-week mid semester bread with immediate effect.
“Consequently, all academic activities on the campuses are hereby suspended. Students are by this notice directed to vacate their hostels within the next 24 hours, that is, not later than 6p.m. on Tuesday, June 02, 2015.”
However,Vanguard learned that the management appears indifferent to the plight of the students after the expiration of the two weeks break,a situation which has infuriated students.
A student, who spoke under condition of anonymity, revealed that the management, through its website, has kept mute as to when academic activities will resume.
The source further lamented the nonchalance position adopted by the management, adding that the prevailing situation has plunged their academic pursuit into jeopardy.
