Ala. man caught after killing woman, kidnapping ex

Alabama police swarmed a remote motel Wednesday night, where they barged into a room and captured a 60-year-old man wanted for murdering one woman and kidnapping his ex-girlfriend.

John Barry Hubbard was arrested by a tactical team from the state Law Enforcement Agency at the Travel Inn off Interstate 59 in Eutaw, Ala.

Tammy Murphy Carpenter, 46, was rescued unharmed one day after Hubbard went berserk, trashing her car and then shooting Carpenter’s sister, 30-year-old Kandi Murphy, before taking Carpenter at gunpoint, police said.

Authorities tracked down the alleged killer and his hostage only after Carpenter alerted a nearby restaurant employee and asked for help. Staff recognized her from TV and called 911.

“She was very nervous,” one Greene Charity Bingo employee told WIAT. “She gave them a tip that she was over there at the hotel and to call local law enforcement.”

Police had been searching the woods in a 20-mile area around the Oakmulgee National Forest, near the Brent home where Hubbard took a piece of construction equipment and damaged Carpenter’s car before shooting her sister around 1:45 p.m.

Murphy died at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

Carpenter filed for an order of protection against Hubbard in May after alleging abuse, but the order expired earlier this month with she did not show up in court, WIAT reported.

Carpenter’s desperate act may have saved her life. She was found in a motel room less than 60 miles away.
