AKURE, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday literally stood still as the new traditional ruler of the town, the Deji of Akureland, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi ascended the throne as the 48th Oba.

His ascension after Oba Adebiyi Adesida joined his ancestors barely three years ago was after undergoing a month of traditional rites.

All shops in the metropolis were shut throughout yesterday in honour of the new Oba.
The state government presented the instrument of appointment and staff of office to him on June 8 this year after all the kingmakers unanimously selected him, a move said to be unprecedented in the 120 years of the ancient town.
Thirteen princes contested for the vacant stool and the new Oba had contested for same twice but failed.
He was however lucky at this third attempt.
With the completion of all traditional rites and his entering into the ancient palace for the first time after been the Oba, the market which had been under lock and key for almost three years will be re-opened and the economic activities in the metropolis would pick up again.
Oba Aladetoyinbo’s coronation ceremony was held with funfare as indigenes of Akure and visitors trooped to the palace to welcome the new Oba as he was finally crowned as the new Deji.
Indegens of the town and we’ll wishers accompanied him to perform the final rites before entering the palace around to ascend the throne of his forefathers.
The Deji climbed the Omolore mud, located in front of the old palace, around 3.20pm with his first daughter by his side, to perform the last traditional rites.
It is the tradition of the town that before a new King ascends the throne he must climb the mud with his first daughter.
The first daughter would thereafter act as regent on his demise.
Without this final rites the Oba is not qualified to enter the palace to ascend the throne as the Deji of the town
