Penn. police officer shot two teens, placed on leave

A Pennsylvania police officer has been placed on administrative leave one day after shooting and wounding two teens after a low-speed suburban car chase, police announced Monday.

The leave is “standard procedure” for when an officer is involved in a shooting under investigation, Reading Police Chief William Heim told local media.

The officer, who hasn’t been identified, pursued the two teens, plus a minor passenger, Sunday night after a report of suspicious activity at a Sunoco convenience store in Reading, the Reading Eagle reported.

The chase ended with gunfire at the end of this dirt road in the suburb Lower Alsace Township. Two teens were shot and wounded.

During the pursuit, which spilled into Lower Alsace Township, the teens struck at least one parked car, and the cop’s car crashed into the teens’ Sedan at a dead end, police said. After that crash, the officer got out of his car and fired at least five shots through the sedan’s back windshield.

"It is just so out of the ordinary here, because it is kind of quiet and everything is low key," resident Andrew Lewandowski told WFMZ.

The pursuit began after a report of suspicious activity at this Sunoco station in Reading.
The driver, 17, remained hospitalized as of Monday night. An 18-year-old passenger was treated and released for gunshot wounds, and the minor in the car was not struck. None have been identified.

Police found a stolen and loaded .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol on the driver’s side of the car, and the driver now faces three felony weapons charges. But no one in the car fired a shot during the chase, police said.
