Fla. man raped mentally disabled girl at church

A former Florida church worker is accused of raping a mentally disabled girl at least seven times — including in front of his own child.

Joseph Averitt, 33, is accused of raping a mentally disabled 14-year-old girl at a Florida church he worked .
The married father was a production engineer at New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka where some of the incidents are alleged to have occurred.

Joseph Averitt, 33, was allegedly caught in the act at New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka, leading to a 911 call and his arrest on Wednesday, WESH-TV reported.


The 13-year-old victim said she had had multiple sexual encounters with the married man since the summer of 2014.

She said it began in one of the church's sanctuary booths. But other times were at his Altamonte Springs home and another time was in a mall's parking lot while his wife shopped inside.

During that alleged incident, Averitt's young son was watching from a backseat carseat while crying, she told police.

According to Averitt's Facebook page, he has been married for just over two years.

The former production engineer for the church has been charged with eight counts of sexual battery on a mentally challenged individual.
