Deputy Field is fired at last.

The South Carolina sheriff's deputy who assaulted a teen girl in a classroom has been fired, two days after footage of the attack exploded into a national controversy, his former boss announced Wednesday.

Richland County Senior Deputy Ben Fields "did not follow proper procedure" in his violent handling of the Spring Valley High School student, Sheriff Leon Lott said at a noon press conference.
"The maneuver that he used was not based on the training or acceptable...Deputy Ben Fields did wrong this past Monday, so we're taking that responsibility for that."
Lott praised the classmates who filmed the officer's overreaction, and encouraged citizens to keep filming cops to help "police the police."
After watching the videos of Fields in the classroom, firing him "wasn't a hard decision," Lott said.
The FBI is investigating the case, and Fields may face criminal charges from that probe.

Fields earned nationwide scorn for clips showing him slamming the girl to the ground and dragging her across the classroom floor, as her stunned classmates silently watch. He was suspended without pay soon after the videos of the insane encounter went viral.
The girl, who has not been identified, brought the bad cop's attention on herself during class Monday morning, Lott said. She ignored the lessons and refused to put her phone away.
"She was not allowing the teacher to teach, she was not allowing the students to learn," he said.
"She was very disruptive, very disrespectful."
Her teacher tried to discipline her, and called in a school administrator for help, before bringing in Fields, he said.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the ouster Wednesday afternoon.
When the girl continued her defiance, Fields was allowed to put his hands on her and tell her she was under arrest, Lott said.
But once he slammed her to the ground, he went way over the line.
"I can tell you what he should not have done: He should not have thrown that student," Lott said.
It's unclear if Fields injured the girl. Lott said she sustained nothing more severe than "rug burn." But her attorney Todd Rutherford told "Good Morning America" Wednesday the girl suffered neck and back injuries, and is in a cast.

The assault shocked local officials and national politicians, and incited immediate accusations of racist policing, since Fields is white and the girl is black.

Lott noted the school administrator who came to the classroom is black, and said school officials supported Fields' fierce reaction.
