Pressing for gun control following the deadly Oregon killings.

Rudy Giuliani, once the pro-gun control mayor of New York City, appeared to pull a 180 on Friday in the wake of the Oregon mass murder.

Not only did Giuliani slam President Obama for lashing out against the gun lobby, the ex-mayor trashed policies for dealing with the plague of violence that
he once advocated.

“I think the President has very little knowledge of what causes crime or how to reduce crime," Giuliani said on the "Fox & Friends" show.

“The reality is gun control laws control the behavior of legitimate people,” he said. “People who rob stores, people who rob banks and people who are insane and want to go ahead and murder people don't follow the gun control laws.”

In an interview with the Daily News, Giuliani insisted he is not opposed to gun control and still believes that people who want to own handguns should be required to register them and prove they know how to use them.

“But I do not believe this has an impact on crime,” he said. “The thing that does prevent murders is the seizing of guns from bad guys. Bad guys don’t register their guns.”

Asked what could have been done to prevent tragedies like the mass murder in Roseburg, Giuliani suggested keeping track of mentally ill people.

“People who are insane can go get a gun because there is no database that shows they are insane,” he said.

President Barack Obama said these shootings have become ‘routine.’
Giuliani’s stance dismayed Nicole Hockley, who became an anti-gun activist after her 6-year-old son Dylan was murdered in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

“I am disappointed that he is going out and insulting the President without proposing any solutions of his own,” she said of Giuliani. “The President is doing the best he can to move the needle forward, to find a solution. I’m not seeing the same sort of response from Mayor Giuliani by attacking the President this way.”

Hockley also said Giuliani’s statement that gun control only punishes legitimate gun owners was “false.”

“At the end of the day we need sensible legislation,” she said. “What’s really going to help is getting in front of the violence and identifying people with a propensity for violence. It shouldn’t all be about gun control or gun freedom. It should be about protecting people, protecting children.”

Giuliani has weighed in on guns and gun violence for years.
