Be a mentor to Officers coming behinde you.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police-DIG, Jintua Amajor-Onu, has identified the lack of mentorship among officers and men of the Nigeria Police as bane of the force.

Onu bared her mind at the Akwa-Ibom State Police Headquarters, Ikot-Akpanabia, Uyo yesterday while delivering a lecture to officers and men drawn from
various units and departments of the police across the state during her official visit to Akwa Ibom state police command.

‘’What we lack so much is mentorship. We are not doing very well in this area and the earlier we start doing it, the better for the police.

‘’If you are a specialist, you have to mentor other officers who would replace you when you are leaving the profession’’, she said

Onu who is also the Supervising DIG, South/South observed that instead of mentoring younger officers to acquire the requisite professional expertise, older officers were busy applying for extension of service.

She charged the officers to have a change of attitude to work and be proactive so as to build a more viable police force and partnership with the public in order to be of assistance to them in information sharing.

‘’You must build partnership with the public because it is the public that will give you information that you need. You cannot expect much from the public if there is no partnership’ with members of the public" she stressed.

The DIG also stressed the need for respect for the fundamental human rights of individuals warning that any officer caught infringing on the right of others would be made to face appropriate penalties disclosing that the Inspector-General of Police and his management team have agreed not to spend money on any untoward behaviour by any officer as such officer would be made to carry his or her own cross.
