We dont use torture to obtain bribe from suspects. NPF

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has, in an interview with Al-Jazeera denied claims by Amnesty International that men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) use extreme torture to obtain bribe from suspects.

He said,
“The Nigeria Police Force in its entirety condemns every element of torture in the conduct of police operation in this country. And we
have units on the ground to check some of these excesses.

“Nigeria Police Force has never been involved in any element of torture in all its activities in the cause of their investigation all over the country.”
Amnesty International had on Wednesday accused the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) of torture and theft in the discharge of its duties.

The human right body said SARS operatives are in the habit of stealing from suspects. They also accused them of engaging in torture to extract bribe from suspects.

In a press document released on Wednesday by the human rights group it alleged that suspects were often subjected to cruel methods that include starvation, hanging, beating and mock execution as means of extracting bribe.
