There should be gun control. Gov.Cuomo

A heartbroken Gov. Cuomo said Thursday the aide who died nine days after he was hit by a stray bullet before the West Indian American Day Parade helped craft the state’s tough gun control law.

But the SAFE act proved to
be no protection to 43-year-old Carey Gabay “because it’s not enough, because guns are coming in from other states,” Cuomo said.

“The cruel irony here is that we passed the toughest gun control law in the country here in New York,” Cuomo said at a Harlem breakfast hosted by the Amsterdam News.

Cuomo said the U.S. needs federal gun control and politicians with “guts and courage” to stand up to the gun lobby.

“As long as you can get a gun from some state down south, put it in a trunk and drive it up, it's gonna get into this state, and that's what's happening,” he said.

Gabay, the Harvard-educated son of Jamaican immigrants, died Wednesday at Kings County Hospital.

Recently named first deputy counsel to the Empire State Development Corp., he was mortally wounded on Sept. 7 while at a J'Ouvert celebration on Bedford Ave. in Crown Heights.

“He lost his life by a random bullet that happened to hit him in the head,” a clearly upset Cuomo said. “Random bullet. What a loss. A total violation of justice — and unnecessary."

"It comes back to the craziness of the gun violence that we allow to occur,” he added. “I am a gun owner. I'm not anti-gun. I'm anti-gun for mentally ill people and criminals.”
