Digestive Disorder

Digestive disorders are among the most common of all health ailments. No matter how healthy you may, you would have suffered from some type of digestive disorder at some time or the other. Digestive disorders can vary in severity and can affect any part of the digestive system. The digestive system
is comprised of the stomach, small intestine, large intestines, liver, colon, gall bladder and pancreas. The mouth and salivary glands are also considered to be a part of the digestive system. Inflammation and irritation can affect any part of the digestive system. Heartburn occurs due to many such digestive disorders like gastro esophageal reflux disease and stomach ulcers. It is also possible for individuals to suffer from more than one digestive disorder. The digestive or gastrointestinal tract is a long tube through which food is processed. Inflammation of the stomach is referred to as gastritis, that of the colon is called colitis and that of the ileum or small intestines is known as ileitis. Inflammation of the liver can also occur and this is called hepatitis and problems of the gall bladder are known as cholecystitis. To keep the gastrointestinal system healthy, it is essential to pay close attention to the diet and only consume foods which suit the capacity and capability of the digestive system.
Symptoms of Digestive Disorder

There are some common symptoms of disorders that affect the digestive system. These symptoms are mostly linked to food allergies and other dietary issues. Individuals who experience symptoms of gastrointestinal problems should consult a doctor as these disorders can worsen if corrective measures are not taken. One of the most common symptoms of digestive disorders is nausea and vomiting. This symptom can vary in severity and may range from a mild, unsettled sensation in the stomach to violent bouts of vomiting. Nausea and vomiting usually occurs when there is ingestion of certain foods that are difficult to digest or that contain toxins. In milder cases, the symptoms will subside once the diet is revised. Nausea and vomiting may also sometimes occur due to migraines caused by food allergies.

Bloating is another common symptom of digestive disorders. It occurs when there is a buildup of gas in the digestive system. It may also occur when there are inadequate levels of bile acids and digestive enzymes that are necessary for breaking down the food. Gas formation occurs due to the process of fermentation. It may also occur when an excessive amount of air is swallowed. Constipation can be a bothersome and uncomfortable symptom of digestive disorders. It is characterized by a reduced frequency in the passage of stools or a hardening of stools. When digestion does not occur properly, the feces buildup in the colon and become hard. In many cases, individuals with digestive disorders suffer from many days of constipation followed by severe diarrhea. Abdominal cramps may also accompany constipation. Diarrhea refers to the increase in frequency of bowel movements or the passage of watery, loose stools. In case of persistent and increased diarrhea, the doctor may test for celiac disease. This is a disease that affects the lining of the small intestine. If there is blood in the stools, testing for ulcerative colitis may be done. Continuous diarrhea can contribute to nutritional deficiencies. Abdominal pain of varying intensity occurs due to many digestive disorders. Pain due to cramps occurs because of the muscle spasms in the digestive organs. Allergic reactions to certain foods can result in severe cramping known as colic. Pain that is experienced near the belly button is likely to originate from the small intestine. Discomfort and cramps around the top, bottom and sides of the lower abdomen may be linked to the colon.

Remedies for Digestive Disorder

In many cases, medications can worsen digestive problems. However, they may be necessary when dealing with severe infections or illnesses. In such situations it may be advisable to consult your doctor for alternative medications or if the illness is mild you could try using natural treatments. Regulating the diet, controlling stress and following an active lifestyle are helpful in preventing digestive problems. Home treatments can also be done to relieve symptoms of digestive disorders. Nausea can be alleviated by chewing on a piece of ginger or sipping on ginger tea. Pomegranate juice mixed with honey is helpful in relieving dyspepsia. Garlic is beneficial in treating diarrhea. To prevent discomfort and indigestion after meals, add some lime juice and black pepper to a few pieces of ginger and chew on them after eating. Peppermint tea consumed after meals is also helpful in preventing heartburn and intestinal gas. Another excellent remedy for digestive problems is to soak dried figs in water and consume them along with the water the next morning. This will help to prevent constipation.
